CAMERA Dambusters film Attack on Sorpe Dam premiere May 2023

Back in the summer of 2021 the team at CAMERA began to work with filmmakers Andrew Panton and Piotr Forkasiewicz to create a set of digital characters for their film Attack on Sorpe Dam. The film features George ‘Johnny’ Johnson and focuses on the attack of the Sorpe Dam in 1943.

Andrew and Piotr are part of a small production team who have been working on a part of the Dambusters story not featured in the original 1955 Dambusters film.

The film will have it’s premiere in Bristol on May 13th 2023. CAMERA’s Creative Lead Martin Parsons will be present to answer any questions about CAMERA’s input to the film production.

CAMERA worked with Andrew and Piotr to create digital characters for a number of scenes in the film. The team collaborated over many months, using our 84-camera photogrammetry setup to scan actors in original uniforms to create digital characters. Our Vicon and Qualisys optical motion capture systems were used to capture their motion and performance to provide movement.

The film’s Director Andrew Panton commented. “There were many scenes we simply could not film in the real world and I am very grateful for the support of the CAMERA team at the University of Bath. Martin Parsons and his team helped create the digital aircrew, WAAFs, ground crew and German anti-aircraft gunners that are featured in various scenes of the film.”

The film is being released to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the Dambusters raid. The film will be premiered in Bristol on 13th May 2023 at the former IMAX cinema of Bristol Aquarium. The film premiere is sponsored by CAMERA partner MyWorld.
