A new joint research centre across the Departments of Computer Science and Mathematical Sciences, The Centre for Mathematics and Algorithms for Data (MAD) will launch the week.

The Centre for Mathematics and Algorithms for Data (MAD) at the University of Bath is an interdisciplinary group of researchers working at the intersection of Statistics, Machine Learning and Numerical Analysis with a huge range of application areas. Data Scientists use mathematics and computation to extract useful information from data. MAD aims to facilitate dialogue between groups, especially theorists in computer science and mathematics, and develop rigour in the field.

Dr Neill Campbell, Computer Science Co-Director noted that “As well as being a hub for things like invited speakers, our plan is to organise shared activities designed to improve interdisciplinary research by getting researchers (PGR and up) to share tools and techniques from both sides. Our hope is that this will lead to improved research from both departments on topics such as Data Science and ML and this will also link in to being able to provide, for example, research level reading groups to students from both SAMBa and ART-AI. The focus of the centre will be the more theoretical aspects but we hope these approaches will be transferred into applications by both departments as well as the IMI.”

A launch event will be held on Wednesday 13th November, with three keynote speakers lined up plus talks from PhD students. For more information please visit https://mathematics-and-algorithms-for-data.github.io/events/launch_event/
