What better day than International Day of Women and Girls in Science to celebrate the recent appointment of Dr Steffi Colyer to Lecturer in Biomechanics within the University of Bath’s Department for Health?

We caught up with Dr Colyer to find out a little more about her research.

‘I joined the University as an undergraduate completing both my undergraduate degree (BSc Sport and Exercise Science) and PhD at the University of Bath.

In collaboration with UK Sport and British Skeleton, my PhD project was focussed on enhancing start performance in the winter sport of skeleton and was conducted in the lead up to the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. My thesis focussed on understanding the determinants of elite skeleton start performance to inform training and coaching practices, and to ultimately improve chances of medal success.

I joined the Centre for the Analysis of Motion, Entertainment Research and Applications (CAMERA) as a Research Associate working on the development of unobtrusively markerless technologies for assessing sports techniques in everyday training and testing environments. My current research is primarily focussed on sprint performance and the associated hamstring strain injury risk factors. I am also co-supervising a project funded by the European Space Agency to better understand the load experienced when performing movements in low gravity situations.

I’m excited to start my new role as Lecturer in Biomechanics and looking forward to initiating new collaborations and projects.’
