Facilities

Studios, equipment and expertise

Building on a decade’s worth of research and the development of skills and expertise in motion capture and virtual production technologies, CAMERA became a Core Research Facility in 2024, enabling the studio and lab to become open and available to an even wider range of companies, organisations, HEI and public institutions.

CAMERA’s facilities include a motion capture volume, photogrammetry rigs, integrated volumetric capture, virtual production LED volume and 3D scanning equipment.

CAMERA Motion Capture Studio

CAMERA’s Optical Motion Capture studio has a volume of 8x6x12 metres and can capture up to 10 performers at anyone time. We have 36 Vicon Valkyrie cameras and 4 integrated reference cameras.

We can perform full body motion capture for performance, including finger tracking, rigid body tracking and a range of biomechanic and sports analysis. Biomechanic analysis is further supported by our 8 Kistler force plates.

For more detailed facial capture, we have a head mounted Faceware Headcam system and a portable iPhone set up.

We have expertise and knowledge in providing skilled technical support for motion capture shoots of people, animals and objects both in studio and out on location, ‘in the wild’.

Virtual Production LED Volume

Our Virtual Production set comprises a 12×3 metres main LED wall made up of 144 Absen panels with a pixel pitch of 1.9mm. It is accompanied by 2 LED Wild Walls, and a LED ceiling screen, all Aoto with a pixel pitch of 3.75mm.

The system is run on Brompton LED Processors and is available as a straight hire for shoots as well as for running more experimental novel research applications through, such as sports training and entertainment.

CAMERA 3D Scanning & Volumetric Capture

Our Full-Body Photogrammetry rig is a custom ESPER frame comprising 144 cameras and 36 EPSER cross polaising lightbars enabling full-body and static object photogrammetry scanning.

Integrated into the photogrammetry rig is our 4D full-body volumetric capture system which comprises 36 Emergent Machine Vision cameras.

We also have a Head Motion Scanning system for 4D facial capture and photometric face capture. Our custom ESPER LightCage has 157 multiflash lights and 12 Emergent Machine Vision cameras.

In addition to photogrammetry and volumetric capture, we offer structured light scanning and laser scanning for even higher precision. For large scale environment scanning of landscapes, buildings and industrial spaces we have our FARO Focus Premium 3D Laser Scanner and for small object and body part scanning we have our handheld structured light scanners. These include the Artec Eva 3D Scanner and the Artec Spider 3D Scanner.
